Modern Methods of Construction Education (MMC Edu) is the outcome of a national initiative led in partnership with Natural Resources Canada and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).
The initiative was created to address critical gaps in mass timber and off-site construction training by connecting educators, industry, and institutions across Canada.
Through collaboration, shared knowledge, and applied learning, MMC Edu supports the development of consistent, industry-informed training pathways that prepare the next generation of skilled workers and support Canada’s transition to low-carbon construction.

MMC Edu is managed by the School of Construction and the Environment (SoCE) at BCIT. The SoCE prepares professionals for careers that shape the built and natural environments. Through programs in construction trades, building technologies, engineering, and architecture, the School equips graduates with practical skills and technical expertise to meet industry demands in British Columbia and beyond. Our offerings span microcredentials to degrees, delivered through full-time, part-time, and industry training formats.
With strong ties to industry and a commitment to sustainability, the SoCE integrates applied learning with real-world projects, leading training development to advance the sector in areas such as mass timber, sustainable design, and energy management. From skilled trades to advanced technologies, the School continues to lead in developing solutions that advance safety, innovation, and environmental stewardship across the construction sector.
Our vision is to strengthen Canada’s construction workforce by advancing high-quality education and training in mass timber, offsite, and prefabricated construction. By working closely with industry, we aim to design training that reflects real-world practices, supports innovation, and responds to evolving workforce demands.
In the coming year, we are leveraging the mass timber training at BCIT to spark a nationwide dialogue with educators and industry. Our goal is to share knowledge and establish a training framework that seamlessly integrates mass timber into skilled trades education.
Looking ahead, our focus will expand beyond mass timber to further integrate offsite and prefabrication training, develop practical teaching frameworks, and grow a national network that supports educators, institutions, and industry in building a sustainable construction future.

Natural Resources Canada supports MMC Education through the Green Construction Through Wood (GCWood) Program, advancing federal priorities to reduce carbon emissions, accelerate low-carbon construction, and strengthen Canada’s clean economy.
This initiative aligns with national goals to expand mass timber adoption, address workforce capacity gaps, and support innovation in sustainable building practices.
